Packing list for a canoe trip
Before we started the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, we had no experience with canoeing. We searched blogs on the internet with packing lists and put together our own packing list. We soon discovered that we had made good choices. Our goal was to travel as lightly as possible because of all portages. At the end of the canoe trail it was cold during the day and we noticed that our water shoes and neoprene socks were not warm enough. We also missed rain trousers, mainly to protect us against the cold wind. Your legs don't move in the canoe and cool down considerably. On the bike and hiking we use a poncho if it rains, but that was too cold in the canoe.
Our gear in our canoe consisted of four separate bags and looked like this:
NRS Bill's bag 65L: sleeping gear (tent, sleeping bags, mattresses) + clothes
NRS Bill's bag 65L: cooking gear (fuel stove, pans, saw) + food + spare parts + hiking shoes
NRS High Roll duffel 35L: camera gear, guide book, maps, toilet bag, ponchos, lock, tarp
NRS dry bag 10L: toilet paper, binoculars, energy bars, wind jacket, compass
In addition, we had a few other things in the canoe that we tied to the canoe or the bags during portages, such as the paddles, the life jackets, drinking bottles and the sponge. We finally tied the wheels on top of one of the duffel bags.
